Breakthrough (Original) Performed live at the Proper Cafe for Jazz Night

"That's my favorite melody. There's my angel phoning me, I hear music. Mighty fine music. And anytime I think my world is wrong, I get me out of bed and sing thus song." BURTON LANE

Every Wednesday is jazz night at the Proper Cafe hosted by Wayne Holmes and Jeff Sheloff. Really great atmosphere for music lovers to get together and just jam the night away. Musicians of young and old usually gather and share in the fun. The attitude comes in when the fun gets twisted up with some other genres of music like Soul, R&B or Gospel music. Last night was no difference and the vibe felt right to add into my set an original.

Breakthrough is a song I wrote a few years back that was inspired by a sermon I was blessed to receive by a wonderful preacher. My heart was open and the music flowed nicely with Byron on drums, Wayne Holmes on keys, Jazzy Matt on background vocals (also featured in the original version of Breakthrough available on ITunes), Jerry McDonald on standup bass, Sir Charles Pulliam on congas and a nice saxophone solo by Karaoke DJ Ron Collins.

This is one of my favorite originals and so to perform it means a lot. Not only because it is Gospel which is one of my favorite genres besides the Haitian music my family has culturally shared with me and made me grow to love, but also because the song has such positive lyrics and the music is funky.

Let me warn you though. If you are interested in copping the original, it is a little different then the live version that I created in my little studio in Kensington. See; to get on common grounds and to a point where musicians and I could unite on this tune without much rehearsal, a similar bass line as is in the original was suggested just for performance purposes; and hence the live version (for performance purposes only), was created.

And here we have the video of the performance. Please take the time to watch. And if you of and you dig it, please comment and/or like. Thank you in advance.

Have a wonderfully blessed day and keep warm. Peace and love.

Rehearsal Modes of JNote: Premium Weekend

Music has always surrounded my heart
and kept it afloat
in this river of life.

Music has always been a part of me
and I do not think it
will ever part from my soul.

It makes me unfold into a butterfly
from the
caterpillar that I once was

and it is because music always quenches my thirst.

And from listening started singing and from singing started imitating or trying to. It is amazing how artists and songs that touched me yesterday still have the same effect on me. And so it is always a pleasure just getting into my zone and afloat on their song and dance that somehow enhance me and make me who I was born to be; Individually me with musicality.

And so this weekend was no different; filled with music in some way. Glad for the opportunity to get with the old in crazy places, brush up on some originals and also create. Who would have thought I’d be the one practicing stage performance for my own material? I mean, I’ve been writing for a long time but God is faithful, so his time not mine.

And here we have the new episode of Rehearsal Modes of JNote featuring my cover of Michael Jackson’s “Rock With You” and also music snippets of my original tunes ”All Night Long and Premium.” Please check it out and let me know what you think.

Thank you so much for stopping by my blog. Please comment and let us know your thoughts or suggestions. Greatly appreciated. Thank you again and God bless you!

I'll Be There (Original by Stephanie Jeannot & Fred Simmons)

I was blessed with the opportunity to perform my original tune, “I’ll Be There” at Essence Bar in Brooklyn, NY with my band Stephanay JNote & the Musiqal Ones Band featuring Chango Everett on drums, Billy Grant on bass, Jazzy Matt on vocals and Fred Simmons on keys.

It is crazy how this song came about. We got together in Long Beach, NY at Chocc Fac studios for the first time and I listened to a series of tracks and fell in love with this one and got to writing immediately.  And the song “I’ll Be There” was born that day.  Such a blessing when the opportunity arises to share what God enables you to create. Prayerfully this song will not only touch your ears but your hearts as well.

Happy to have performed my song live with the original keyboardist who created the musical track, Fred Simmons.  The following is the video clip of it.  Please watch my live performance of “I’ll BeThere” and if you dig the song, like and/or comment.

Thank you for all your support. I appreciate you and love
you with the love of God. Peace!

Jazz With Attitude Wednesdays

Jazz With Attitude is a night for musicians and singers combined where they all come together and help to keep live music alive.

From 8:30 PM to Midnight, musicians and singers come together and unfurl the jazzy attitude within.  Nice place to network and have a good time. By place I mean the Proper CafĂ© located at 217-01 Linden Blvd in Cambria Heights, NY.  Free to get in and free street parking available.

What I like about Wednesday nights at the Proper is the welcoming nature of the two hosts keyboardist Wayne Holmes and Saxophonist Jeff Sheloff. Their warm attitudes are very appealing which carries in the music that they share and play together. Also featuring Shinya Miyamoto on drums, Dave Jones on bass and Stephanie Jeannot on vocals.

The following is a commercial created by Melodiaz Creations about Wednesday nights at the Proper. VPlease click on the Youtube link below to access it.

Finally, I spoke about it but now would like to officially invite you to come out Wednesday night to jam, sing, eat, dance, hangout, drink and to have a good time with us. Come check it out this week maybe. I know it is snowing out and cold but, "what do we care how much it may storm? We have our love of music to keep us warm." Please join us. See you Wednesday!

Thank you for stopping by and reading my blogpost everybody. Peace and blessings to you!

Poem: Flames of Experience

What would you do if after a night on the town
and while approaching home all you hear are sirens sounds
and when trying to turn down your street you get stopped
and come to find that there is a fire on your block?
You carry the moments of the day as a memory with care,
until your mind goes blank by the smoke ascending into the air.
And coming from where?  The house you reside;
and then think, “what if I had stayed home tonight?”
And what if I was trapped behind the door
with an issue firing at me that couldn’t be ignored
and had to find a route to escape
what could have been a deadly fate?
But instead you were out and enjoying the day
without a thought that something like this could come to play.
For, when you left you had a home standing firmly,
only to come back with your eyes on your house burning.
God forbid this would happen to you!
It was experience for the most part; my writing cue.
For it happened to me and though years, they do pass;
This is my testimony; God kept me and I’m thankful for that.
